« Company History »

Allender Butzke Engineers Inc. was founded in May of 1992, under the direction of Harry Allender, P.E. and Milton Butzke, P.E., now having over 80 years of combined geotechnical and construction quality control experience in Iowa. David Logemann, P.E. and Hamid Feiz, P.E., providing additional geotechnical engineering expertise, also partnered in establishing this new organization that furnishes geotechnical, environmental, and construction quality control services.

Our Midwest consulting experience dates back to 1963 when Mr. Allender, as a co-owner, founded Des Moines Testing Laboratory which he consolidated with Patzig Testing Laboratories in 1970. Mr. Butzke joined Mr. Allender in 1974, subsequently becoming an owner in Patzig Testing Laboratories Co. Inc. until the company was sold in 1989 to Twin City Testing (Huntingdon Engineering and Environmental now Stork). ABE grew from the original four founding owners in 1992 to 28 full-time employees in less than 3 years.

ABE currently averages 35 to 40 employees with many of our engineers and geologists having Masters degrees in their respective fields. Our professional and technical staff attend conferences and seminars to stay abreast of new technologies and procedures to provide our clients with the highest levels of technology in demand for today's projects. We own our test drilling rigs, in-situ testing equipment, and an array of modern, state-of-the-art laboratory and field testing equipment.

ABE is accredited by the AASHTO Accreditation Program (AAP) which recognizes the competency of a testing laboratory in construction materials testing. The AAP conducts an initial on-site laboratory assessment which includes an examination of the testing apparatus and observation of test procedures.

Periodically during the year, proficiency samples are sent to ABE by AASHTO re:source and the Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL) to check both the instruments and operators under actual testing conditions. ABE is accredited in various soil, aggregate, and Portland cement concrete tests.
